Abstract
At the end of the 19th century, there was a profound concern among doctors, architects and intellectuals about the situation of the city in terms of its material conditions and their effects on public health. In a broad sense, their impressions were inspired by a hygienist matrix that guided their decisions and proposals, beyond the replacement of the miasmatic interpretation by a microbial biological explanation as the cause of these diseases. It´s so, the initiatives promoted by state entities that conducted housing and public health policies, beyond the first third of the 20th century, continued to be inspired by these postulates. Recognizing the persistence of these principles in housing matters constitutes the main interest of this article. © 2022, Universidad de Concepcion. All rights reserved.
